There are many opportunities to volunteer in upcoming days and weeks, from helping to spruce up our school at this weekend’s TLC day, to joining the Green Team to create a school that is more sustainability conscious, to stuffing envelopes for our biggest fundraiser, the Fall Auction. Green Team Report
Sunday, June 6th, 2010As of May 27th, we’ve saved 832 pounds of land fill and diverted it to composting from the no waste lunch!! We’ve gone from 3 to 2 land fill bins a week. Great effort everyone!!
Next year: We’ve got several possible projects on the table such as: a school wide recycling program; a OUSD-wide effort to get green cleaning products; and a possible wild zone/create with nature area in the front of the school. If you are interested in helping get any of these going or have another green idea you’d like to make happen at JM, please call and let us know or join us in August for our kick off meeting. Stay tuned for date and place. Contact Ariana Candell at arianaca@sbcglobal.net or 531-5766.
Green tip: Sick of so many catalogs being delivered that you don’t want, plus all the paper, ink, and delivery waste…. Opt out of as many catalogs as you want at http://www.catalogchoice.org/ . I’ve used this and it works!
Spring Fair Volunteers Needed
Thursday, May 20th, 2010We’ll have the favorite carnival game like the 5th grade Sponge Toss, cakewalk, lollipop pull, and catapoultry along with some new games guaranteed to make the Spring Fair more fun than ever. This is a fun event that is a way to celebrate the year, but is not a fundraiser. We just try to break even and have a good time!
We need volunteers to help run the games. Look for signups in the hallway at the end of the week. We’d love to have some help putting this fun event together in future years, so please let Cynthia Frenz, Dawn Lortetz, Christy Simons or Karen Fee know if you’d like to help.
Please note that this year, kids can receive two extra tokens for bringing a recycled bag to for their prizes!
Green Team Report
Sunday, May 16th, 2010The “No Waste Lunch” at JM is up and running well!!! The students are learning a lot about how to sort their lunches and many students are coming to school with no waste. Many thank yous are in order for all of those who have helped to make this possible: Kristin Nichols and her fantastic Ecology Club produced a skit for the whole school assembly, making it fun for all to learn about Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and Rotting! They also made inspirational signs for the Multi-Purpose Room wall. Thank you to Josie Jesser for sewing green sashes for the 3rd grade student lunch helpers identification. Thanks to all the 3rd graders and their teachers for being at the lunches to teach and support students to sort correctly. Thanks to all our parent volunteers: Hope Salazar (who also put together the info pamphlet), Janet Parish, Christy Simons, Jen Ferrnte, Eric Hubbard, Ariana Candell, Karen Loughran, Stephanie Eckhaus, and Terry Bennet. A BIG thanks to Mr. Jackson for being so adaptable with the new routine and Ms. Smith for all her support.
Green Tip: Take your family, friends, or self and get out in nature to a place you’ve never explored before. Look for how many new plants, flowers and creatures you can find. Talk to each other about all the cool things you’re seeing and hearing.
“No Waste Lunch” Launches Today!
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010The day has finally come and all is ready for the start of our Green Team sponsored “No Waste Lunch” program at JM. The students learned about how to recycle, reuse and compost their lunch at an assembly last Tuesday presented by the Ecology Club. Refer to the green pamphlet in your children’s backpack last Friday to give you ideas of how to pack lunches with less garbage and more reusable containers.
We hope to create awareness at JM for children, parents and staff to think in more sustainable ways so please talk to your children about the importance of this program and consider taking more steps at home to reduce, reuse, recycle and rot (compost).
Thanks for your support in helping to make Joaquin Miller a greener school! Any questions about this contact arianaca@sbcglobal.net
