February 12-16th kicks off the 2nd Annual JM Reading Week! Our goal is to encourage reading, challenge students to read in subject areas that they might not otherwise choose, and to encourage use of the library. Please help your child join in the "JM Reading Week Game" by encouraging them to read for at least 15 minutes each day.
If you have older children, encourage them to read 10 pages a day or an entire book in a week. Your child may read aloud to you or read silently.
Talk about books with your child and encourage them to choose new books from the library each week. Let your child know that reading is valuable, and that it is an important part of your life as well.
One of the most important ways to encourage your children to read, is to allow them to see you reading. At the end of the week, all children who have completed the program, will receive an award, along with their well earned recognition in the display case across from the library. The children will be bringing home their JM Reading Week Flyers that include a tally sheet and book review form by next Friday. Use the tally sheet to keep track of their minutes or pages read, and return it to their classroom by Tues., Feb. 20.
Your child can also fill out the simple book review form to review a book they have recently read, or have read in the past, and have them turn it into the box in the library. Extra book review forms will be in the library also, in case your child wants to share more of the books they have loved, or maybe the ones they thought were duds.
We hope to receive a bunch of kid book reviews which will be displayed in the library for use by the children when selecting books on their library day. So select your books (don't forget to check out the awesome selection of books that can be purchased at the JM Book Fair-Feb. 6), and get ready to play the JM Reading Week Game! Let's start our children on the path to a love of reading that will last a lifetime!
Help support the new landscaping/teaching garden by purchasing a laser engraved brick. Your brick commemorating a student, teacher, or graduate will be part of our new landscaping and will raise money for the landscaping. The laser engraved bricks with your message will create a lasting memory of your family at Joaquin Miller. Each 4” x 8” brick is $50.00 and can have up to 3 lines of copy, each 20 characters in length. The deadline for ordering bricks is February 28. Download this flyer to place your order.
The performances will be at 10:30 am and 11:00 am (same performance
for either time) in the Multi-Purpose Room. We will be featuring children from the following classes: Mr. Barrett, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Groome, Mrs. Sudduth and Ms. Williams. Please mark your calendars now and join us for this festive and exciting program. The children are eager to perform for us.
Mark Your Calendars Now... The Annual Marine Mammal Night will
be held on Tuesday, February 6, 6:00-7:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose
Room. Parents are invited to come and view all the culminating projects
the students will have prepared for the event.
Students participating in this event are from the 2nd grade classes of Mrs. Diane
Groome, Mrs. Sara Green and Ms. Marianne Williams.
Book Fair Night Will Also Be Held on Tuesday, February 6 From 6:30-8:00 pm in the school library. Although the students will have the opportunity to visit the Fair with their class, this evening event will give parents an additional opportunity to purchase books with their children. Thank you to Mrs. Cindy Gullikson, Librarian, for sponsoring our school wide Book Fair. All proceeds will go directly into the Library Fund, which helps to keep our Library materials current and in circulation order.
Hope to see you there.
