JM community input for new principal selection process

Hello Members of the Joaquin Miller Staff and Community. Thanks so much for two wonderful input sessions on Monday at Montera. There were over 30 Montera and JM staff and 125 community members present, all of whom gave valuable input regarding the skills and characteristics desired for the next principals at both schools. I really appreciate everyone taking time out of their busy schedules to offer your thoughts and support.

As Joel and I stated, the OUSD principal selection process is very thorough and is meant to get as much input from as many members of the school community as possible. We do this in order to make the best leadership match possible for the staff and community, but most importantly, the students.

Attached is the input from every JM parent group that was present on Monday. The ideas are very strong and will be taken seriously by the selection committee, which will consist of 5 JM staff and 5 JM parents that represent the diversity of the school. I am still collecting input via email from parents and staff unable to attend Monday night and will share that with the selection committee next week. The timeline of events for the selection process is described below by Joel Baum, manager of Leadership Development.

As we all know, an outstanding school MUST have an outstanding principal to lead outstanding teachers which leads to outstanding student success. With the help of the community, we hope to have an outstanding principal named at both schools the week of August 13th.

I am requesting that one of the JM parents forwards this message to the JM yahoo group so everyone can stay in the communication loop. As always, please email or call me (879-8663) with any ideas or questions.

Thanks so much and take care,
Eric Nelson
