***Please fill out “Parental Consent and Release Form” (check your child’s backpack or get a copy from the teacher) and return to the teacher.***
The African American in California History day is rapidly approaching! We are looking forward to this all-day event for the fourth graders! There will be storytelling, cooking, mask making, quilting activities, dance performances and music. Children are welcome to wear clothing of the 1940’s time period or cultural clothing, however it is not required.
If you did not respond to our earlier request for help, it is not too late! Please return the $15.00 fee to cover the cost of food, fabric, and art supplies to your teacher as soon as possible.
In addition, if your child has any food allergies, please indicate them below (especially peanuts which will be in he stew)_________________________.
Parent volunteers are still needed as activity coordinators or assistants for Publicity, Scheduling, Photographer and Videographer for this all-day event. We need parents to provide assistance at the cooking and quilting stations. We need parents who will be able to spend the day with a group of about 10 children, guiding them through various activities. We need parents to provide sewing machines and to sew quilt pieces together that have been hand stitched by the children. We need parents to assist children in the classrooms with hand stitching prior to the day of the event.
We also need articles that reflect the time period and cultural items of interest, such as books, cloth, and music of the 40’s for the day. We will safeguard any items that you do not wish to be touched.
Please read and complete the attached forms and return them to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. There is no need to signup if you responded to the earlier request!
Parents, we realize that your schedules are extremely busy. However, lots of parent participation is key to the success of this event. So let’s work together to make this annual celebration the very best ever for the children! If you have questions, please call
Debra Carter-Kelly (510) 530 – 5328.
Thanks in advance for your prompt attention to this request!
Sincerely,
Joaquin Miller AAICHD Committee

In the library this week, we explored NetTrekker in Mrs. Ulrich’s and Mrs. Hill-Roy’s classes. NetTrekker is an online search service paid for by OUSD which offers pre-selected web sites appropriate for students. Students were introduced to the process of evaluating a web site: what makes a web site reliable and useful for doing research.
Logging onto NetTrekker
If you have not bookmarked the JM Library site at home yet, go to:
http://www.joaquinmiller.org
Select Library at left
You’ll be sent to our library’s home page: Select NetTrekker
Username: joaquinmiller Password: joaquinmiller
Select Elementary tab.
Using some of the students’ biography topics, we searched for Lou Gehrig. The results were only one page, but a very good page from the Baseball Hall of Fame web site. We discussed what makes this page good: the page is from an organization that is well-known and has a long history; their address and phone are at the end of the page; the web address contains “.org”; (a “.com” address might mean that the web site is trying to sell you something).
Read-aloud feature
Selecting this feature allows highlighted text to be read out loud to you. This feature works best on Internet Explorer (not Firefox).
We explored pictures of Elvis Presley with the Image search.
GOOGLE: NetTrekker does not replace a web browser like Google, but students will be pointed to kid-friendly, readable web pages more quickly.
We explored fun hoax web sites to introduce students to outrageously unreliable web sites:
Jackalope: http://www.sudftw.com/jackcon.htm
California’s Velcro crop: http://home.inreach.com/kumbach/velcro.html
