Feast 2005 - Crafts
Dear 2006 Craft Chair:
Please read the 2004 craft chair letter. It is very comprehensive and gives all the details of what is needed. The main difference between this year and past years (this is my second feast) is the location of the crafts. In previous years, crafts have been located in the Madrone area of the park. This area is away from the main food prep area and is very cold and damp. This year the day started out as very wet and damp. It was decided that the crafts should be held at the tables behind the adult tables. This turned out to be a much nicer set up for both the adults and children. It was closer to all the other activities and warmer (just slightly) than the Madrone area. I would definitely recommend to keep the crafts in this area of tables behind the adult eating tables.
As I said it was a very cold and wet day. We were almost going to relocate the whole feast to the school but it would not have been the same. Had they relocated to the school, the children would not have cooked the food (the parents would cook at home and bring it to the school). This would have resulted in the children probably doing a lot more crafts. However despite the wet and the cold, the feast was an amazing event and the children and adults had a great time.
I had bought plastic paint cloths ($9.99 at home depot for 6) to cover the wet tables. This helped but things were still rather wet and windy. All the craft people were prepared. It appeared that most crafts had leftovers from the previous years and that not many new supplies were needed. I would make sure each person in charge of each craft check their supplies early. They may need to replenish their supplies for 2006. Candles and seed medallions were the most popular. The teepees were not too popular and could be eliminated if desired.
This is a great event in my children's Joaquin Miller experience! Enjoy and have a great feast!

2008
We were lucky enough to have a beautiful dry day. The crafts were in the new location which was a huge improvement. Since it was dry, we were able to cover the tables with paper I took from the rolls in the school hall and secured it with masking tape. Be aware that the candle table should not be covered in plastic, even on a wet day. The plastic tablecloth will melt if the hot cans of wax are placed on top.
Since I was supervising the lobster, I was a very hands-off coordinator. The craft volunteers did all the work and seemed to need little from me.
