FEAST NOTES 2005 - PROCLAMATION INSTRUCTIONS

What Are They?
An official certificate of participation in the Thanksgiving Feast. They will be distributed in class the day after the feast. Unlike other crafts, every child must complete a proclamation.
Preparation Prior to Feast
• Get Feast box out of storage. Get the key to storage from the
front office.
• Check the box to make sure you have all the items (see
inventory sheet).
• Xerox enough sample writing pages (one per student is
enough).
• There is a master proclamation sheet. Add in the correct date
and Xerox the proclamation sheets. (Xerox about 10 more than
the number of students to plan for mistakes.)
• The seal for the school can be checked out in the front office in
order to emboss the gold seals.
• Cut ribbons, per sample
• Create the proclamations, placing the ribbon and gold seals
(see samples).
• Have your child practice by placing the practice sheet on the
clipboard at home before the feast so you can get a sense of
how much they will need to practice (usually they write their
name from 1-3 times on the practice sheet).

Day of Feast SetUp
• Tie the rope around 2 trees (for drying proclamations). Attach
clothespins to the rope.
• Use one picnic table in the craft area (see attached sample set
up).
• Tape a trash bag at the end of the table next to where the
students do the final proclamation. On the other end of the
table, tape a list each class of students, onto a separate brow
paper bag. Tape these bags to the table. Place three
clipboards, with clips, on each side of the picnic table. Reserve
one on each end for the final proclamations. Use the other four
spots for practice work. Place the appropriate writing paper on
the clipboards. Place a bottle of ink in between the writing
areas. The feathers are placed in the glass jar.
Activity
• Have four children at the practice stations. Have them practice
getting the appropriate amount of ink in the quill to prevent the
ink from running. Tapping the quill on the ink bottle helps
regulate the amount of ink in the quill. When you determine
that they are ready to complete the final proclamation, move
them to the final proclamation area.
• Before they start the proclamation, place a colored dot on the
back, representing the appropriate teacher.
• When the proclamation is finished, hang it on the clothesline
with the clothespins. As the proclamations dry, remove them
from the clothesline and place them in the appropriate class
bag. Cross out each child's name as you put the proclamation
in the bag. If any child has not completed a proclamation by
the end of the session, round him/her up to complete a
proclamation. Note: If it is extremely damp, try hand drying
the wettest proclamations over the campfire.
• Have each child clean their hands with wet wipes prior to
moving to the next table. Wet wipes are not included in the box.

The first thing to realize is that there are two proclamations boxes in the shed. They should be fairly well stocked. You will probably need to buy some more parchment paper and possibly some ribbon. I stocked it this year, but extra paper is needed. There ought to be plenty of ink. Some of the new feathers need to be cut at the bottom on a diagonal line. Proclamations: We had a wet morning so I would recommend that you wait until that last moment to take out the final certificates. We also found that the only way for them to dry was to hold them over the fire used for the candles. Baby wipes are a must! Bring lots of dry towels if you have a wet day. The site for the crafts is under trees so even when its clear on the field, the tree grove is often wet. Kelly Jonick volunteered to make a new master proclamation in calligraphy. You will need to make at least 10 extra as soome children need to do theirs over.

Proclamations: The area was wet. We had to use paper towels. I would recommend bringing dry cotton towels for the children to sit on. It would last longer than paper. I would not recommend hanging the completed proclamations on the clothesline as moisture from the trees will drip and smear the kids' fine work. Lying the proclamations under the table was a better option for us.
