Welcome to the Joaquin Miller community! This page is intended to be a guide for how to get school information, give you an overview of what you need to do before school starts, and what to expect as a new parent at the school.

Kindergarten Assessments
In April and/or May, Joaquin Miller’s kindergarten teachers conduct short (10-minute) assessments of incoming students. The assessment provides an opportunity for you and your child to visit and to give the school information about your child. You can learn more on the Enrollment page.

Kindergarten Tea
Please set aside time to attend the Kindergarten Tea August 20th. Held in the Joaquin Miller multipurpose room, the tea is a fun event where you and your child can meet your classmates, tour the school, learn how to get involved, meet your Kindergarten teacher, and have your questions answered.

Be sure to check the JM events calendar too, for possible incoming Kindergarten play dates over the summer.

Registration Day
Parents will be able to pick up new- and returning-student registration packets from the school's office August 12- 23. The packet includes all of the forms that must be completed for each child. There are additional forms for new students such as, immunization and dental health forms.

Registration for all families, new and returning, will take place on August 24th. At that time, parents, or a designated representative, will be able to submit both school-related and PTA forms. Each student will receive her/his new class assignment.

The principal and JM-PTA will be on-hand to take your PTA membership dues and classroom donations. These donations support our classrooms by providing basic supplies, field trip funds, and other essential classroom needs. Please be as generous as possible.

School begins August 26, 2013.

What to expect early in the school year

On the first day of school, set aside some time after dropping off your child to swing by the multipurpose room for some coffee and to meet other parents and learn more about Joaquin Miller School. You'll be able to sign up to volunteer in the classroom, or become a room parent (each classroom needs two or three).

Room Parents help organize a number of seasonal events for the kids during the school year (such as the Halloween and Valentine's Day parties) and help communicate classroom information to the parents.

At Back-to-School Night in September (10th for K, 12th for 1-5 grade), you will have more of an opportunity to get to know your child's teacher, meet other parents, and ask any questions you may still have about school.

Also, on September 8, the Dad's Club hosts a Back-to-School Picnic at Roberts Park, another great event to meet other families and learn more about the school while the kids play and get to know each other.

In addition to this website, there are several sources for school information: the JM community email list, the online events calendar, and the Walkie-Talkie newsletter.

The community email list is the main source of up-to-the-minute school news. You should subscribe as soon as you know your child is attending Joaquin Miller. It is a forum for all community members to share information and ask questions. You can even use it to arrange new-student playdates!

Use the JM events calendar on this website to see what's coming up at the school. Updated weekly, you can add the events calendar to your own Google calendar.

The bi-weekly Walkie-Talkie newsletter is published by parent volunteers, in coordination with the JM faculty and administration. It is delivered in both printed and electronic editions.

A word about the Joaquin Miller PTA

Finally, we strongly encourage all parents to join the JM-PTA. At Joaquin Miller we have traditionally enjoyed a membership rate of about 95% of our families. Membership is obtained through paying District PTA dues. The work of the PTA is carried out through its Executive Board and through numerous program committees, that all are welcome to join.

PTA meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month of the school year. Child care and a pizza dinner are provided at no cost to make it easier for families to attend. You'll find in attendance friendly and passionate parents, teachers, and the principal, working together to make our school the best it can be. The year's first meeting on September 20 is a special family-style Spaghetti Feed — don’t miss it!

Our efforts and fundraising support our computer lab and library, motor development class, third-grade flute class, arts enrichment, teacher’s assistants and supplies in most classrooms, in addition to facilities improvements such as the purchase of a digital kiln for the school and playground equipment and matting for the school yards.
